Fit Bit O' The Month

IS HARDER REALLY BETTER?Doug Rennie

by Doug Rennie, Portland Velo's own  "Health & Fitness Guru"

Well, with regard to certain activities, yes, definitely. Or so I've heard tell.

But. When it comes to your bike tires . . . uh, not so much.

I run my tires at 100 psi. Dohnne, at Team Sales Cycling, tells me (often) that 95-100 psi is the Euro (clinchers) norm, even for some really fast guys he used to ride with Over  There. Bigger guys might go as high as 110, but that's it.

So I decided to conduct my own personal experiment last month, pumped my tires up to 120 psi (the number I most often hear bandied about) for the Saturday ride. The results (keeping in mind here that this is wholly subjective, based entirely on one rider's perception): I felt no faster at all, not on the flats, not on the climbs. Same effort to produce the same speeds. The BIG difference I noticed was how damn harsh the ride was vis a viz my usual 100 pounds pump-up. Bouncing, shaking, jarring, vibrating for the entire ride. And on the heavy chip seal sections such as Wren Rd., it felt like I was riding a freaking jackhammer.   Read More...

June 26 - Sad news:

Bruce Giunta

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that Portland Velo member and my good friend Bruce Giunta passed away this morning, June 26th.  Bruce was a beacon of all that is good with our sport.  In his quiet, unassuming and sincere way Bruce touched 100's of lives in the Portland cycling community.

He and his brilliant red "Italian Steed", the Ducati, will be greatly missed.

As we climb on tomorrow's ride, push the pedals a bit harder in honor of Bruce.

Please keep Bruce's family in your thoughts and prayers during this challenging period in their lives.  As information regarding services become available they will be posted.

Sincerely,
KRhea, President/Director Portland Velo Cycling Club

Update June 29:  A brief article about Bruce in the Sunday, June 28 Oregonian can be found here.

Volunteers needed for Bike Beaverton event-August 2.  Give back to the community!

The Beaverton Bicycle Advisory Committee (BBAC) is helping to coordinate the second annual Bike Beaverton ride on Sunday, August 2nd.  We are in need of volunteers to help make this event a success and hope the Portland Velo community can lend a hand.

We need about six people to help with rider sign-in.  This will mainly involve riders signing waivers and handing out ride participant wrist bands.  We are also looking for folks to be ride marshals during the actual ride.  The event is a 6-mile, family-friendly ride through the streets of Beaverton, followed by a FREE ice cream social.

Those interested in volunteering can contact Mike Mulligan via e-mail More details about the ride are also available at http://www.beavertonoregon.gov/bike. Look for more details in the upcoming June issue of VeloCITY, to arrive in your email inbox soon.
