    This Saturday...August 2nd...Edgefield...Crown Point...Falls...With Larch Option

    Howdy Folks-

This Saturday is the first Saturday of August and you know what that means? (Drum Roll here...)

For August we will be departing out of McMenamins Edgefield

    Departure Time:  9 AM

The Route will take us from Edgefield on Halsey up to Crown Point, down to the Falls and then we return back to Edgefield.  For those who wish to add a little "Extra," Larch Mountain before Crown Point is there for you.  14 miles up....14 miles down.

Route Maps will be posted shortly.

    See you there!

Nance and I are in. We'll be looking to drop the Velo race team going up Larch Mtn with the tandem - especially if they spend too long bowling Friday night!

    :)

And, replying to my own post (because nobody else will), I assume that we'll be stopping at Edgefield for a beer and burger after the ride?

    John,

Do you have a rough idea of miles, elevation gain and pace?

I mean, elevation gain not counting Larch Mountain. :-)

Not more than 2000 ft - possibly less.

I don't remember the miles - despite having done the ride about a dozen times. I'd be surprized if it even got to 40. You really need to do Larch Mtn as well to get some meat in there!

     Robert-

Total Miles is just under 38.  We will be splitting up the pace groups at Edgefield.

    See you there!

    Robert,

High point  of the ride is Crown Point @ 910 ft. Howeve, the software says that the gain and decent are about 5300 ft total over the whole route. Many rollers.

Thanks for the info Jim, sounds like a pretty good ride. Richard, I'm not looking for that much 'meat' in my rides yet, but I appreciate your suggestion.

Interesting.  At first I didnt' think this was possible.  Then I plotted the Larch Mtn loop.... 66 miles and 11,000 feet????  That doesn't seem possible.  The first 25 miles gain close to 5000 feet to the Larch summit, but then the topography looks like small bumps.  Maybe they add another 5000 feet?

    Re: This Saturday...August 2nd...Edgefield...Crown Point...Falls...With Larch Option

I think there's an error in the software. There is no way a trip from Edgefield to Multnomah Falls, and back is 5300 ft. Also, the trip up Larch from Multnomah Falls (or Edgefield) is just a little over 4000 ft - probably 4200 ft. The Larch parking lot is under 4000 ft, and there is only one noticeable descent on the way up.

There are a few rollers after you descend from Crown point, but these would total in the hundreds of feet.

Last fall, a group of us climbed Larch Mountain starting and ending at Glen Otto park just east of Troutdale. My Garmin Edge 305 reported a total elevation gain of 4,500 feet. This sounds pretty close to me. I don't know how much the ride from the Larch turn-off out to the falls and back will add, but it can't be that much.

Definitely.  I looked at the profile this morning and it appears there are 2200 feet of elevation gain on the Larch Mtn DESCENT!   I have used Topo USA for 10 years and it is usually pretty accurate.  This is one of those rare times when the numbers don't make sense - similar to when I first plotted Logie Trail from Hwy 30 and the map suggested there was a 1/4 mile descent 2/3 of the way up the climb.  Pretty sure there are no elevation losses on Logie Trail ;-)
