2008 LSC On Course Ride Marshals

For the second year running, Portland Velo will be providing the on course Ride Marshals for the cycling portion of the LSC.  We will need approximately 30 volunteers to ride all portions of the course (10, 40, 70, and the 100 mile course which was closed last year) to provide directions, encouragement, limited mechanical assistance (flat tire etc), and potential first responder assistance in case of an emergency.

This year's course is identical to last year's, with the exception of the loop around Hagg Lake, which will be done in a counter-clockwise loop to avoid crossing in front of people bombing down the hill.  Course maps, elevation profiles, and a really cool inspirational video featuring a few of the PV Ride Marshals from last year (4 seconds in) can be found at: http://www.livestrongchallenge.org/site/c.frKPI1PAIoE/b.3920225/

Ride Marshal sign ups will be done on a first come first serve basis, however we will be filling the slots first with club members who have been active Ride Leaders and club volunteers over the past 8 months first, then active club members to fill out the numbers.
In addition to our on course Ride Marshals, PV will be providing “Wingman” who will stage out of the last rest stop in North Plains and ride in with the last handful of people on course.  This is a new offering that PV will be doing this year, and the LAF is very excited to have us assisting with it.

If you have any questions regarding the Ride Marshals this year, either post here or contact me at matt@portlandvelo.net, or John Ohnstad at john@portlandvelo.net.

This sounds great Matt! I would be interested in helping out at our rest stop and then serving as a wingman at the end of the day. If I'm understanding things correctly, it should be possible to do both. I'm looking forward to it!

    Matt,

I had so much fun last year in rain, wind, and, cold that I want to do it again.  I know the weather will be better? Longer distance this time.

Count me in.  How could I turn down 70 miles of monsoon weather?  Seriously, I'm looking forward to it!
    On cycling safety:

When motorists die it is usually the result of collision with motorists. When cyclists die it is also usually the result of collision with motorists. The dangerous activity is driving a motorized vehicle.

To distinguish whether the victim was practicing the same dangerous activity as the perpetrator is nonsense.

Jason and others who are looking to register.  Make sure to check Linda and my post about registration for Rest Stop, Wingman, and Ride Marshal postions.  There are a few steps you have to do in order to get registered, but its a fairly simple process.

    Matt,

I signed up today to be a road marshall.  Not sure I signed up correctly, so could you contact me if I do not show up on your list.

    Dave,

I don't get any confirmation or list at the moment.  You should receive a mail from the LAF regarding your registration.  If you can mail me your preference for speed and distance that would be great (matt@portlandvelo.net)

Matt, do you need me on the 40 or the 70?  (Sorry, I'm not up to doing 100 :-)

Every climb that does not kill me
    makes me stronger.
Every headwind that does not kill me
    merely postpones the inevitable.
