Crater Lake Rim Ride - Aug. 29

I know a few people have expressed interest in getting a group together to do this ride.  Sponsored by Mid-Valley Bicycle Club of Corvallis, it's fully supported and the registration fee includes camping fees at Diamond Lake.  I did this ride in 2007 and it was great. It is quite a long drive to get there on a Friday so if anyone wants to go south early and reserve a big campsite once we know how many people are going, that would be great.  So far the following people have said they want to go:  Dean & Barb Lee, Mike Yurconic, Mike Stevens, Mike Bernard (that's 3 Mikes!) KRhea & Debra, and Gary Molloseau.

Note:  They do cap the number of riders who can do this, as limited by the National Park and the size of the campgrounds. Non-riding family members are welcome to stay in the campgrounds while people are off riding  if they choose to.

If you'd like to go, write a check for $35 and send in your registration form asap.  Here is the flyer.

    Info from the MVBC website:

ABOUT THE RIDE: The 32nd annual Mid-Valley Bicycle Club Crater Lake Tour is scheduled for the weekend of August 28-30, 2009. Come join us for a breathtaking ride around one of Oregon’s most scenic wonders. We have reserved camping on the southeast side of Diamond Lake at Broken Arrow Campground. This year the National Park System has placed a limit on the number of riders who may participate in the Rim Ride. Please register early to guarantee a space. The ride on Saturday, August 29th, is designed to start and end at Diamond Lake for a total trip distance of 61 miles. Some riders may elect to drive to the rim and then ride the rim only, for a total distance of 34 miles. Transportation to and from the rim will not be provided by MVBC. Most riders choose to ride back to the campground from the rim for an exhilarating finale. Good physical conditioning and alpine gearing (25-inch low gear) are recommended since the ride is quite hilly and at an elevation greater than 6200 feet. All riders must wear a helmet. The ride fee includes map, route description, SAG stops, and a camping spot for two nights. The campground has flush toilets and showers. An additional fee is required by the National Park Service on entering or exiting the park. This fee is $5.00 per bike or $10.00 per motor vehicle, payable at the park entrance gate. Campsites, SAG stops and permission to ride in the National Park are not guaranteed for late registrants.

    EVENT DATES

    • Early registration: postmarked by August 15th
    • Ride start: Saturday morning, August 29th, Broken Arrow Campground at Diamond Lake

June 29 Update:  I have emailed the MVBC to find out the registration status. My guess is that it's still open,  but the registration form doesn't state the # riders they are limiting it to.  I'd suggest that if you want to go & haven't registered yet, that you do so.  I know a few people have signed up so far and it should be a really great ride.

June 30 Update - the person who plans this event for MVBC informs me that most of their members don't sign up until August 1.  So there should be plenty of spots still open if you'd like to register. She also informs me that it's a ride, not a race, and that cyclists "need to have our best road manners in order to keep our permit with the National Park Service."

July 29 Update - here is the MVBC website with registration deadlines.  Also check out the view -

Yay! It will be fun.  So far I think the list consists of (besides myself)

    Dean & Barb Lee

    Gary & Vicki Mollosseau

    Shane Rankin

    Einar & Carol Traa

    Mike & Annie Yurconic

    Mike Bernard

    Geoff Talbot

    Cary Williams

    Pat Gibson

If anyone else is planning to go, add your name(s) to the list. That way whoever goes early on Friday to reserve a common camping spot will know how many to expect - or two adjacent camping sites.

Aug. 4 update:  It's only 3 weeks away!  Who is planning to leave early on Friday & reserve a primo campsite?

Be sure to bring something delicious to share for Saturday night's potluck dinner.

I've got my registration in for this ride.  Crater Lake has been on my list for years; guess it's time to actually make it happen.

I'm going to Crater Lake on July 24 with my hiking group and intend to ride three or four laps. I'll post a report here afterward.

Sending in my registration tonight.  This was a leg of the CO2007 route.  Hard ride but beautiful.  Yeah you better have a climbing gear for this one.....

My registration is in the mail.

Can anyone tell me what a "climbing gear" is?  The rim ride info talks about a 25" gear.  I assume it is a lower than standard gear.  What do I need to be thinking about when I currently have a double compact crank set?

    Thank you for your help.

Depends on how strong your legs are. Crater Lake is mostly hills, miles and miles of 6-8% hills. If you are fine with climbing long 6-8% hills with your compact, then you don't need to change anything. I have seen it done on a single speed.

Hey Pat, you'll have no problem with your compact set-up.  You're a strong climber and will do just fine.  I've ridden it with a 53/39 12/27 combo once or twice.  My knees "argued" a bit near the end but nothing serious.

It's a great route, just watch out for the tourist "gawkers"...

KRhea, will you be gracing us with your presence on this fantastic ride?

Also, anyone wanting to carpool, post it here. Who is willing to drive down early on Friday to get a good campsite, or at least some good adjacent campsites? It would be fun to do a potluck dinner on Saturday after the ride (and a shower!!)

If your name is not on the list above, then you didn't receive an email from me yesterday about this camping trip/ride.  Let me know and I'll gladly forward it.

If you are still undecided about this trip, you can still register.  I received an email from Nancy Meitle saying:

"Our total numbers are down this year so folks can still register. This is a low key event. So I have some flexibility. The nearest real store is more than 100 miles away so what I need most is an accurate count before I leave town. The late fee is waived for anyone who lets me know they are coming before I leave town. "

Email me and I'll send you Nancy's email address - before Thursday (tomorrow) August 20.
