Bicyclist Harassment Ordinance passed in Mo.

So - I was reading Levi L's Twitter page and he pointed to this http://www.bikemonkey.net/?p=5063

The general idea - it is a misdemeanor to harass a bicyclist by honking, throwing things, yelling, etc.

    Is this a good idea?

Should we see if we can get this passed in some of the communities we ride in?

Should we add this to the list of things for the Oregon Legislature to look into during their next session?

I'm new to these political things - but it seems like a good idea to me.  I have had things thrown at me, and frankly - I hate cars honking their horns and scaring the heck out of me

Would be nice, although I think if Oregon got a Vehicular Homicide law on the books it would have a lot more teeth.

So as much as I would love something like that law here is the problem:

You are riding along person in car honks and yells "get off the road a^&hole" something like that obviously their intent was to harass you.  You in turn call the local authorities to report this crime.  The police officer or deputy then takes your statements and then tries to locate the suspect.  Here is where the problem is, you report exactly what happens, then if the LE person can find the suspect it becomes a he said she said investigation there is no evidence unless you were carrying your helmet cam that also records audio there is no evidence.  Jerk in the car says yeah I drove past there, no didn't honk my horn didn't yell anything, or better yet I wasn't driving and every person I know as access to drive my car and I have no idea who was driving it.  See my point we run into similar situations like this in other cases indecent exposure comes to mind, unless the suspect makes an admission there isn't much to go on and it takes a lot to get a potential jury of our peers to convict someone on stuff like this.

    My input,

    Gregg
