Alert: Start time change this week only

The ride will Roll Out at 8:00 AM

6/27/15 - 8:00 am: ROOD BRIDGE, GOLF COURSE, THATCHER, NORTH PLAINS (46.1 miles,  944 feet of climbing OR 38.8 miles, 875 feet):

We are offering two routes so that everyone can be back by 11:30 am or so - i.e. before the real heat hits!  Both rides are the same until mile 25.  At that point the longer ride groups continue on the full route and the shorter ride groups take a right (from Thatcher) onto Purdin and head back to LaCie.  AGAIN, the intent is to get all groups back to LaCie by around 11:30am - noon at the latest.

The Full route is pretty simple - it's a big, mostly flat clock-wise loop following the title. We head out 229/231 and then past Century High School.  The we take Rood Bridge to Burkhalter-Simpson, and to the Golf Course via Johnson School.  From the Golf Course we head over to Fern Hill and then through Forest Grove.  After that we head north on Thatcher to Kansas City and then across Greenville to Harrington. Then it's over OR 26 and through N. Plains, south on Jackson School, and pick up Meek and head home.  The Short route differs in that at mile 25 it takes a right on Purdin and heads across Verboort and Cornelius Schefflin to Wren.  From there it's the Hornecker Sprint and Glencoe-Evergreen home. To download files for the short route go to the weekly ride e-mail.

This is another week to be conservative in speed group choice - and length of ride.  Riding in the heat - especially when we're not used to it - puts added stress on our bodies.  Better to chill a bit and ride slower - in addition to lots of hydration, copious use of sunscreen and good electrolyte management.

The weather forecast is moderating slightly - with the high happening later in the day.  But, do plan for temps during the ride being between 70-90 degrees and probably high humidity, given the now-predicted cloud cover.  And, keep an eye on the predictions as they seem still volatile as we approach the weekend.

Portland Velo was founded in February 2006 by a bunch of folks (35 of us, actually) who simply enjoyed riding bikes together. Since then we've grown to over 400 members. Our philosophy is "It's All About The Ride" - join us for a ride and find out why we continue to be Oregon's premier cycling club.
