I originally started road cycling as cross training for indoor roller speed skating. This was way back in the early 90's. My first bike was an old Club Fuji that was given to me by a coworker that actually used to speedskate for the same team I was on. That one was a bit small for me, so I sold it after trading some old skating equipment for a Trek 2100 from 89 or 90, I think. That one was a bit small too, so I sold it after putting a decent share of miles on it.
About 5 years later, I moved to Portland and decided I really needed a road bike. I found a couple sweet deals on Craigslist for a Centurion flip-flop and a 2001ish Ciocc road frame. I bought them both on the same day and slowly built the Ciocc while commuting on the Centurion.
I finally finished the Ciocc last August...the day before my first century. Seriously...the day before. I rode 109 miles on a bike I had never ridden before wearing brand new shoes sitting on a brand new saddle. The saddle was great. The shoes not so much. Late in the ride, I became fearful of shifting as the jolt sent through the drivetrain went through my feet. I finished, though. Even with the poor dietary choices I made.
This year, I'm training to do the Seattle to Portland ride in one day. I'm also returing to the U.L.C.E.R. ride in Utah to improve on my time from last year. With broken in shoes this time. I have an eye towards a good share of racing next season, too. Especially after my debut race at Mt. Tabor left me one spot away from the top 10.
I hope to see you on the road!
